Introducing iPad
So...unless you've been living under an iRock, you've more than likely heard of Apple's new iPad. There has been a lot of mixed feedback about it. Some love it, but some see it as only a larger iPod Touch. But if we really dig deeper and look at the potential for Apple's new creation, I think the iPad could be just as much of a game changer as the first gen iPhone.Let's think back to the launch of the first iPhone:
- No 3G
- 2MP camera with no video
- No app store
- No copy & paste
- No MMS
- No GPS
- $499 / $599
- The list goes on and on...
Now think of how far the iPhone has come in hardware and software since its "lowly" beginnings.
The iPad is already ahead of the first gen iPhone. It starts out with a base price of $499. It is a blank canvas for the thousands of designers who already create content for the App Store. It will also draw a new crowd of designers and with more room to play, I expect some pretty incredible apps in iPad's future.
Here's a short list of some things the iPad would be great for:
- Showing off your portfolio. A nice big hi-res screen would be great for showing clients and friends your work.
- Photo editing. I would love for a Photoshop or a Lightroom, but I'm sure there will be several apps developed specifically for this task.
- Gaming. Though not work related, everyone needs a break. And what better way to be creative than to play!
- Reading. With Apple's new iBooks app, even I want to read...real books!
These are just a few reasons I think the iPad will be successful. What are your opinions? Would you buy one now or wait for the 2nd generation?

Here is an interesting app for the iPad. http://vook.com/
Seems pretty cool way to integrate video and text.
Although it certainly looks cool, I don't see myself running out to get a iPad anytime soon. Since all I use my macbook for is to surf the web, I might switch to the iPad when my old macbook dies.
There will always be people who see a product, in particular an Apple product, and will complain about X feature that it doesn't have, or how Y function isn't good enough. I think a camera should have been a given, but definitely not a dealbreaker.
If you run the numbers, I think Kindle's future has all but diminished. For the price difference (getting the lowest iPad), it's definitely worth the extra cash. It's a sizeable chunk of change to jump from the Kindle to the iPad, but in all honesty, if you're strapped for cash...you're not buying a Kindle in the first place.
I'm excited to see where it goes in the next year and a half. By the time I get started on grad school, I expect that it will be just shy of understood that you have some version of ebook reader. As far as photography realm impact, I think the possibilities are endless. As the technology expands, I imagine some form of Adobe Photoshop will be available, which could definitely draw those already using Wacoms.
There will always be haters, but I think Apple's set another industry standard. I'll still wait to see what comes out in the next generation, simply because I survive without it now, and who knows what additions will be made to Gen2.
The more I think about it I really do think the iPad will be a game changer.
I read an interesting article by Scott Bourne that made a lot of sense to me. read it here:

I agree! And I'm somewhat confused. Many people are bashing the name...BUT, it lines up with their product line. Obviously it is iSomething. Pod, Mac, Phone, simple, one syllable words. I feel like it fits well. And if the name is a deal breaker for you, you probably weren't too interested in the first place.
I've got to have multi-tasking for this to really grab me. The concept is great and all, but I just really can't believe that there isn't multi-taking.
You're going to need one big ass pocket, or an iBap: http://www.ohnodoom.com/ibap/
