The mysterious QR code.
I was in NY last weekend and walking around times square I kept seeing these odd shaped bar codes on a lot of billboards in Times Square. I have noticed them before but it just had not registered with me how prevalent they are becoming. They are called QR Codes (QR stands for Quick Response) or sometimes they are referred to as 2D codes. You can create a link to just about anything. There are so many possibilities for this. I am thinking primarily with the interactive nature of it. Anyone with a camera phone can scan the QR code using tons of free apps. Once scanned it takes you right to whatever its linked to. The whole process of scanning is very quick and easy and does not ask very much of the viewer.I have been using this FREE app on my iPhone for reading the QR codes. QR Code Reader and Scanner. BEYOND COOL. (!!!) I've seen them everywhere and finally found a good app for reading them--now I'm obsessed! I'm going to start communicating solely in barcodes (and their corresponding webpages!)
My boss discovered these some time early this summer and we tried to use them in some promotions for a local college we do work for and we're still using them on some things but the response has been somewhat lackluster. We found a site that both creates and tracks the codes down to the kind of phone used to scan it but unfortunately we've not gotten very many hits despite the fact that we even gave information on what it was and how to scan it whenever we used them for promotions. We used them on postcards & t-shirts, neither of which I thought were good uses. To me this was the way to initiate a sort of viral campaign, along the lines of yard signs and stickers of just the code and how it works posted everywhere in the target area, but given budgetary & time restrictions (not to mention the clients lack of vision) we were unable to create such a campaign.
