Super Bowl XLV 2011 commercial roundup.
Overall it sort of felt like a lack luster showing this year. I had some favorites but for the most part, too many just fell flat. The Pepsi Max commercials and the Groupon ones in particular were million dollar failures in my opinion.
Check out this great site: http://brandbowl2011.com. They have a nice way of ranking the commercials. Right now they have the Chrysler 300 commercial "Born Of Fire" with Eminem as the leading commercial. I enjoyed it but the ending was sort of a let down. I expected some sort of singing after that great choir build up. Instead it was just Eminem's trademark scowl. It did succeed I suppose, after all I did google Chrysler 300 after it was over.
The blog post "The Super Bowl Of Social Media? Maybe Next Year." by Ian Schafer on DeepFocus.net brought up a good point. The author talks about how this year people thought there would be too much social media tie-ins with their commercials. Instead there weren't any at all to speak of. A good example of a missed opportunity? The Chrysler 300 commercial talking about changing Detroit and all that. Why wouldn't they have a link to a site where you can actually get involved and improve the motor city?
In support of Christina Aguilera messing up the National Anthem. At least she didn't lip sync it.
For purely geek related reasons I LOVED the Captain America trailer. I have been waiting since before I could read for a good Captain America movie to come out, and it looks to me the time is now.
Also, as a testament to it's sheer geek power, what other commercial can get a room full of guys throwing hi-5's without even playing a voice over. Transformers 3! It didn't even have music and it was awesome. Just some deep discordant notes.
My favorite commercial by far was the kid as Darth Vader. I posted it a couple days ago. Here is a nice interview with the kid from the commercial on the TODAY show.
This embed-able player from HULU is very cool. Click on the commercial you want to watch and a viewer pops up and lets you watch it right here.
Mayor Jeff

The Volkswagen ad was my favorite but I was disappointed that they cut it down to 30 seconds for broadcast. But I guess they decided to save the $3,000,000.
I liked the Chrysler ad but was also disappointed that Eminem didn't sing with the choir.
Yeah I was disappointed with the edited version of the VW ad also. My favorite was the Eminem commercial for Brisk, mainly because it was just awesome animation and it didn't pull any punches with the dialogue.
The Chrysler one was cool, minus the fact that they are apparently using bailout money for Superbowl ads...
According to this article, it seemed to have worked though...

I've got to say, I CANNOT wait to see Captain America! Love the Marvel Comics movies, but the VW commercial was by far my favorite! Can't beat the power of the John Williams Star Wars theme combined with the mini Darth Vader PLUS a new VW! Awesome!
