Sure Photographers need to know style, but where do you go to get it? ➤
I think that every (good) blog or website has a voice. A unique voice with a unique message. The voice and message usually have a lot to do with the person(s) behind the blog. Personally, I have a blog, The Collective, about the intersection of photography, business and life.Jeff has created an incredible resource here that I get a lot of great design ideas along with other "big ideas". With that in mind, I thought I would share a site all about fashion and style I recently found and some thoughts about how to leverage it for your business.
I have a belief that as a photographer, it's important to know style - fashion, home design, color, etc. It's a large part of how backgrounds are chosen for a season, frames offered clients are updated, or the direction taken with your marketing.
This doesn't mean that you have to be something that is untrue to you. It doesn't mean that you should to be a hipster today and a hip-hopper tomorrow. It DOES mean you should be aware of what each will be wearing. It DOES mean you should be aware of what your target clients will be wearing or the colors they'll have in their home.
The problem for many of us who aren't into the up-to-the-minute styles and fashion is finding a good place to find that information. I recently came across a website that has found a way to bring that information to the masses (from the masses themselves) - Polyvore.com
Polyvore is a site dedicated to fashion, and relies on it's readers to do as much of the work of displaying what's hot. It allows readers to clip their favorite styles from all across the web. Then those styles are added together to create fashion sets. These sets can be shared across the social media universe.
This means in one simple place, you can spend a little time finding out what current top trends in fashion are, how these trends are "styled," and examples from all the top celebrities and brands.
Another benefit of Polyvore is the ability to use it as a marketing tool. You can create your own style sheets, share them with your followers and display them on your websites and social pages. Show how much you know, and why a senior, family or mother should choose you as it's photographer
Check out Polyvore, and I share other sources you use to stay current with what's cool and hip now.
