How many squirrels do you see a day?
Squirrel!
That's one of the best scenes from PIxars "Up!" movie. It has become a catch phrase at our studio. Anything that is a distraction or a waste of time we call a squirrel.

What are the squirrels in your daily routine? I think a few distractions during the day are ok. Looking up from your computer every hour is a good thing. Just don't loose a half hour following links from twitter or facebook.
The squirrels I wrestle with everyday:
- emails
- Spending too long on one image.
- blog tweaking
- Google+
- AdobeIdeas
- Nertflix
- iPhoneography
- Lightroom
Obviously this is not a list of bad things, but a list of potential time stealers. Anything in excess is potentially a bad thing.

What are the squirrels in your day and how do you control them?

What's nertflix? i've got blog readings, twitter, texts, ical invitations, email, skype, the number of little divets on my cieling, making to do lists, who knows.
Austin "The number of divets on my ceiling"
That's awesome. During truly dull moments, I find myself imagining what the room would be like if it got turned upside down.
Excellent.. I have no divets in the ceiling.. but if i turn the room upside down i could count the divets in the carpet? hehe

You set it up according to your needs. ie. An accountant using photoshop to edit the family happy snaps is a distraction but for me it is twitter for others, twitter is part of their job. So you tell it what you do and what you are supposed to be doing and rate how far off track you are with time wasters.
It runs in the background and calculates your active use of things.. and sends you a weekly report. You can also add it to staff members computers - although I suggest that they know about it, they wouldn't necessarily. Your report includes a break down of your categories and then your top activities/sites/use.
My target is to not shop - last week I shopped for 5m and 26 seconds a day (and I managed to buy 2 things in that time LOL) . My eff score came in at 0.87 (44 hr 36 mins) with a average of 0.18 (30h 11m). It is really useful at highlighting your actual time. I would have said i spent two hours a day looking at email but I average about 5 hours a week.
